At 81, Priscilla Presley FINALLY Reveals What Elvis Did That Made Divorce Inevitable
For decades, the relationship between Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley has fascinated millions of people. Behind the glamorous photographs, the famous wedding, and the image of the King and his young bride was a complicated marriage that gradually became impossible to sustain. Years later, Priscilla has continued to explain what really happened—and her story is far more complicated than a simple tale of a marriage falling apart.
Priscilla met Elvis in West Germany in 1959, when she was only 14. Their relationship eventually led her to Memphis, where she became part of Elvis’s extraordinary world. They married in Las Vegas on May 1, 1967, and welcomed their only child, Lisa Marie, the following year.
But the fairy tale did not last.
According to Priscilla’s later accounts, one of the biggest problems was Elvis’s infidelity. In a 2025 interview, she described discovering letters from other women and realizing that Elvis was living a separate life while performing in Las Vegas. She still described him as a special person and a good husband in many ways, but admitted that the constant presence of other women became too painful.
The problem went deeper than cheating, however. Priscilla increasingly felt that she was living Elvis’s life rather than her own. In her later memoir, she explained that she needed an identity independent of her famous husband. Her marriage had gradually become a situation in which Elvis’s needs dominated the household while her own dreams and emotional needs were pushed aside.
There were also painful tensions surrounding intimacy and emotional distance after the birth of Lisa Marie. Priscilla wrote about feeling neglected and lonely, while Elvis spent increasing amounts of time working, traveling, and performing. The couple eventually became emotionally separated even while remaining connected as parents.
Priscilla has also acknowledged that she had an affair with karate instructor Mike Stone. She has explained that this relationship was not the sole reason for the divorce, but rather one catalyst in a marriage that had already been deteriorating for years.
Perhaps the most important revelation is that Priscilla did not leave Elvis because she suddenly stopped loving him. In her memoir, she explained that she still loved him when she walked away. What she wanted was a life of her own.
The couple separated in 1972, and their divorce became final on October 9, 1973. Despite the painful ending, they remained close and continued sharing responsibility for Lisa Marie.
That is what makes their story so heartbreaking. Elvis was the love of Priscilla’s life, but loving someone was not enough to make the marriage work.
In the end, Priscilla chose something she had been missing for years: the freedom to discover who she was outside the shadow of Elvis Presley. And perhaps that was the hardest truth of all—not that their love disappeared, but that sometimes love alone cannot save a relationship.
