ABBA Then & Now | Pop Legends Through the Years

Few groups in music history have experienced a transformation as extraordinary as ABBA. From four young Swedish musicians in the late 1960s to global pop icons whose songs remain beloved decades later, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad created a legacy that has outlived generations.

The story began when Björn and Benny met in Sweden in 1966 and discovered a shared passion for songwriting. But behind the glamorous photographs was a complicated personal story.

Both couples within the group eventually experienced relationship breakdowns. Björn and Agnetha divorced in 1980, while Benny and Frida separated in 1981. By 1982, however, the group had effectively stopped working together.

For years, fans wondered whether ABBA would ever return.

Then something unexpected happened.

In 2016, the four members reunited privately for the first time in decades, and in the following years they recorded new music together. Their long-awaited return eventually produced the album Voyage, proving that the magic between the four voices had never completely disappeared.

The reunion took an even more futuristic direction with ABBA Voyage in London. Rather than relying on traditional touring, the project uses digital versions of Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Frida performing alongside a live band. And that is perhaps the most remarkable part of the “then and now” story.

The four people who once stood together in dazzling costumes are no longer the young performers the world remembers from the 1970s. They have aged, changed, pursued individual interests, and lived very different lives away from the spotlight.

Yet their music has barely aged at all.

In 2025, ABBA’s official history noted that “Dancing Queen” surpassed one billion YouTube views, while “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” reached one billion Spotify streams. (ABBA)
