Willie and Waylon didn’t always agree.

Together they helped challenge Nashville’s traditional system and became defining figures of outlaw country.

Willie didn’t need to tell Waylon that he believed in him.

They recorded together, toured together and eventually became half of The Highwaymen.

2. KRIS KRISTOFFERSON — HE TREATED HIM LIKE AN EQUAL

Kris Kristofferson admired Willie enormously.

When The Highwaymen formed with Willie, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, Kris later remembered being onstage with musicians he considered his heroes.

But Willie didn’t treat Kris like an admirer.

4. MERLE HAGGARD — HE KEPT COMING BACK

Willie and Merle Haggard belonged to the same disappearing generation of country originals.

Years later, when both men could easily have lived entirely on their past achievements, they reunited for Django and Jimmie.

Willie openly praised Merle as one of the best.

In the early 1990s, his famous battle with the IRS resulted in much of his property being seized and auctioned.
