On April 24, 2020, the country music world lost one of its most beloved voices when Harold Reid, founding member of The Statler Brothers, passed away at his home in Staunton, Virginia, at the age of 80 after a long battle with kidney failure.

For millions of fans, Harold was much more than the deep bass voice that anchored the group’s legendary harmonies. He was a gifted entertainer, a talented songwriter, and the heart of a quartet whose music touched generations.

Born on August 21, 1939, Harold grew up in the Shenandoah Valley alongside his younger brother, Don Reid. Together with Phil Balsley and Lew DeWitt, they formed what would become one of country music’s most celebrated vocal groups. Later, Jimmy Fortune joined the quartet in 1982, helping continue the group’s remarkable legacy.
