For generations of country music fans, Harold Reid was much more than the unforgettable bass voice of The Statler Brothers.
He was the group’s comedian, storyteller, and larger-than-life personality—the man who could make an audience burst into laughter one moment and leave them deeply moved by a gospel hymn the next.
In his later years, Harold faced serious health challenges, including a long battle with kidney failure. Yet those who knew him best often remembered not his illness, but his remarkable spirit. Family members and longtime friends have described him as someone whose wit and faith remained central to who he was, even during difficult times.
That balance of humor and heart had defined Harold throughout his career.
Whether performing beloved songs like Flowers on the Wall, Do You Remember These, or The Class of ’57, Harold brought warmth and authenticity to every performance. His playful banter on stage became just as memorable as the quartet’s legendary harmonies, making audiences feel as though they were spending an evening with old friends.
Behind the laughter, however, was a man deeply devoted to his family, his faith, and the musical partnership he shared with his brother Don Reid, Phil Balsley, and Lew DeWitt. Together, they built one of country music’s most distinctive and enduring vocal groups, earning Grammy Awards, multiple industry honors, and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
When Harold passed away in April 2020 at the age of 80, tributes poured in from across the country music community. Fans remembered not only his extraordinary bass voice, but also the joy he brought to every stage he stepped onto.
